Introduction & Hypothesis

-Provides interesting, concise background material including stated connection(s) and vocabulary related to broader area of study.

-Clearly worded statement of purpose.

-Hypothesis stated in proper if, then format and is clearly linked to the principle of the lab.

-Section written in third person

-Provides background material with vocabulary or stated connection

-States purpose

-If/then format incorrect

-Section written in other than third person

-Any one of background, purpose, or hypothesis missing, or unrelated to the principle of the lab

-Any two components missing

-Section Absent

Materials & Procedure

-Accurately summarizes given procedure in 5 numbered steps or less.

-Clearly states modification (if any) of materials from the laboratory.

-Section written in third person and present tense.

-Summary of procedure is in students own words given in 5 steps or less but overly wordy/not numbered or missing minor step.

-Modifications omitted.

-Missing one key step from procedural summary.

-Summary contains more than 5 steps.

-Section written in other than third person and present tense

-Misses more than one key step

-Section Absent

Results

-Data organized into neat, logical tables or other appropriate form

-Observations are organized into logical format

-Unexpected data is noted

-All data is represented with the correct units.

-Data organized into table or chart

-Observations are clearly noted

-Unexpected data is not discussed

-Data is not clearly organized into tables or charts or is messy.

-Observations are unclear

-Section written in other than third person.

-Units are incorrect or missing

-No organization of data or data is incomplete

-Section Absent

Data Analysis

-Includes appropriate, correct, and properly labeled graphs (Title, number, axis, and units)

-Calculations (where appropriate) correct including units

-Graph is constructed on graph paper or is word processed (Excel, GA, etc)

-Includes graphs

-Calculations included, but contain minor mistakes

-Graphs improperly constructed or include errors

-Major mistakes in calculation, units omitted on answers

- Section written in other than third person.

-Omitted or wrong units on calculations

-Graphs not constructed on graph paper or word processed.

-Section Absent

Conclusion

Includes a properly constructed paragraph that:

-Clearly restates the point of the experiment

-Clearly states the outcome of the experiment with a conceptually appropriate and complete explanation

-Logically addresses the acceptance or rejection of hypothesis

-Relates what was learned to broader area of study.

And

-Thorough error consideration in a separate paragraph

Includes a properly constructed paragraph that:

-Restates the point of the experiment

-States the outcome and explains some of the reasons behind the results

-Acceptance or rejection of hypothesis is noted with some discussion

and

-Some error consideration or merely several sentences at end of conclusion

Includes a properly constructed paragraph that:

-Omits the point of the experiment

or

-Fails to explain results

or

-Contains minimal discussion of hypothesis

or

-Section written in other than third person or

-Little to no discussion of error consideration

Includes a properly constructed paragraph but:

-Is missing any two or more of major components as explained previously

-no discussion of error consideration

or

-Doesn’t  include a paragraph

-Section Absent

Questions

-Questions fully answered (including paraphrasing of questions) with very few misunderstandings

-Questions are copied and not paraphrased.

-Answers contain some misunderstandings.

-Answers to questions incomplete (skipped or not paraphrased)

-Questions are more than ½ incomplete

-Section Absent

***Points may be deducted for egregious or repetitive spelling and grammatical errors.
