St. Johnsbury Academy seeks students of good character who will make positive contributions to the total school community. Besides the racial, cultural and geographical diversity that most independent schools seek, St. Johnsbury Academy, as a comprehensive school, values academic and intellectual diversity as well. Students' personal integrity and contributions to previous school communities differentiate applicants. The result is an admissions policy that both considers a student's potential for success and values a student's potential positive impact on the school community. The Academy accepts students in all four grades (9-12) and a postgraduate year. The largest number of resident students enters the tenth and eleventh grades. To qualify for admission a student must be between the ages of 13 and 19.

Following an initial inquiry a student will receive an application packet which includes an application form, English and mathematics teacher recommendation forms, a school reference form, and a transcript release form. The completed application form will be submitted, along with the application fee, directly to the Admissions Office. The official transcript and teacher reference forms should be sent to the Admissions Office directly from the applicant's school. Click here to download our application.

St. Johnsbury recommends, but does not require, the Secondary School Admissions Test. In recent years, the SSAT scores of the St. Johnsbury Academy student body have ranged from the second to the ninety-eighth percentile. Therefore, the school uses these scores primarily for the purposes of course placement. The admissions committee makes admissions decisions primarily based on past grades, teacher recommendations, and the results of a personal interview, whenever possible.

Applicants should plan to visit the Academy campus with parent or parents, unless distance makes it impossible. This visit allows the applicant to tour the school, inspect the dormitories, visit classes, meet with students and faculty, and talk with a member of the admissions committee. Appointments are available from 8:00 - 4:00, Monday through Friday. The most valuable time to schedule a visit is when the school is in full session.

A student will be notified of acceptance immediately after all necessary information is received and evaluated. Parents will be asked to confirm the acceptance and forward a tuition deposit by April 10. Students accepted after March 10 will have 21 days to confirm acceptance and forward the tuition deposit. Tuition is payable in full by August 1. Tuition insurance is available.

Financial aid funds are available to students who demonstrate financial need, strong potential for success, and good citizenship. When a student has been admitted to the Academy, the amount of financial aid is determined by the availability of funds and the family's financial need. Financial aid decisions are based on the recommendation of the School Scholarship Service of Princeton, New Jersey. This service requires parents to complete and file a Parent's Financial Statement with photocopies of the Federal Tax Form 1040 and supporting schedules.

For more information about financial aid contact the Admissions Office at (802) 751-2130.
