Union Memorial School

Parent Newsletter

January 14, 2005

Delayed Openings: I just want to take the opportunity to remind you that on days when the opening to school is delayed two hours please do not drop your child off until 10:10 AM. As on regular openings, we do not have the staff to properly supervise the students until this time. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

School Report Night: The annual school report night will be on Tuesday, February 8 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. This is an opportunity to watch a presentation on assessment results and data that pertains to Union Memorial School (e.g. enrollment figures, class size and teacher experience).

Appropriate Dress for Recess: This is just a reminder that our temperature cutoff is 10°F (including wind chill). That means students go out to recess when the temperature is above 10°F. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately.

Playground Update: We are close to our goal of $53,000 for the new playground. As of this writing, we have raised $38,000. Our next, and hopefully final, fundraising effort will be tiles that can be purchased and decorated by families or individuals. The tiles will be displayed on a board that recognizes all contributors to the project. Information on how to purchase the tiles will be coming soon.

Lock-Down Drill: On Wednesday, January 19, the faculty and staff will go through a lock-down drill without students. The purpose of this drill is to get the school ready and work out any issues before we do a drill with the students in the spring. This drill will happen in the morning between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM. A uniformed police officer will be stationed at the main entrance and parents and students will not be allowed into the building. I will provide more information about the actual drill with students when we get closer to the date.

Parent Seminar Series: The Green Mountain Center for Gifted Education is sponsoring a series of seminars on issues related to gifted children and adults. The series starts with Gifted: Not My Child on February 10, followed by Navigating Your Gifted Child’s Education on March 10, A Differentiation Primer for Parents on April 14 and ending with Gifted: Who Me? a session on gifted adults on May 19. Each seminar will be held from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Unitarian Society on Pearl Street in Burlington. For more information or registration contact Lucy Bogue at lucybogue@yahoo.com or call 658-9941.

Respectfully,

Chris Antonicci
