Welcome to the Art Room!

The visual arts program is taught by art education specialist Ann Joppe-Mercure. Classes consist of forty-five minutes of direct instruction each week for first and second graders, and thirty-five minutes of instruction weekly for kindergarten students. The curriculum is sequential and is based on Vermont and National Art Standards. The curriculum includes:

Visual Literacy - the elements of design (line, color, shape, texture and form)
Art Production - drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, crafts and cooperative creative expression.
Art History - origins and traditions of visual arts.
Art Criticism - describing, interpreting and evaluation of art.
Aesthetics - the philosophy of art.
Interdisciplinary Connections - combining art with other subjects for student learning.
Approach to Learning - creative thinking and problem solving.

Art teaches ways of thinking and problem solving while developing skills with the use of different materials, processes, mediums, and techniques for creative self-expression. Students gain a critical understanding of the universality of art and an appreciation of their own work and the work of others.
