Guidance

The guidance program at UMS serves all the students in our school. Our full-time counselor, Carol McCleary, visits each classroom during the year. The Second Step program is being used this year. This curriculum focuses on developing empathy, impulse control, and anger management. New skills are built upon the previously learned skills. This program is being used in kindergarten, first, and second grade. Information is sent home regarding these lessons so parents have a chance to talk with their children about what is being taught.

Guidance groups are also available to students. These groups consist of 4 to 6 students who meet weekly for emotional support and educational purposes. The focus of any guidance group is to gain a better understanding of oneself and others and how to solve problems. Topics for groups are: divorce/separation in a family, problem solving (which includes ways to handle anger) and friendship skills. Other types of groups have been created on an as needed basis, In the past, we have had support groups for students who have siblings with special needs, children with a parent on military deployment, groups that focus on assertiveness, and groups to help students who are being retained.

Students can also see the counselor one-on-one for more individualized support. This type of service, as with any other guidance service, is most successful with parental involvement. Frequent contact, whether over the phone or in person, is beneficial to a student's progress.

The Guidance Office has many resources for parents. These books and videos are for parents to use at their convenience. To see a sampling of the reading available at the UMS guidance office, click here.

Mrs. McCleary is also available to parents for support and information. Once again, this can be over the phone or in person.

Please don't hesitate to call the Guidance Office at: 878-1949.
