Music

Welcome to Music at Union Memorial School

The Music program is taught by Ms. Martie Mutz, Music Educator.  Students in First Grade, Second Grade and 1st/2nd Multiage classes come to Music class once a week for 45 minutes.  Students in Kindergarten come to Music class once a week for 30 minutes.  Students are exposed to and experience the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, form, style) while they SING, DANCE, PLAY, LISTEN TO and CREATE music.  The Colchester Music Curriculum (revised July, 2003) is based on the nine National Standards for Music Education.

Students experience and participate in whole-school assemblies each month.  One feature at most of these assemblies is the singing of our school song, "Glad To Be Here."  During Diversity Week last November, 2003, 2nd Grade students performed three dances during an assembly.  All students also participate in our annual whole school sing-along in December, featuring multicultural songs from around the world.

Union Memorial School holds at least one evening musical performance each year for family, friends and the community.  In February, 2004, students performed Three Of A Kind, a musical revue written by John Jacobson and John Higgins at Colchester High School in the auditorium.  Because of the size of the student population, half of the school performed one night and the other half of the school performed the other night.  We are very fortunate to have access to the auditorium at Colchester High School for these performances.  Click on the thumbnails below to view pictures from the show:
