Community Service Learning
Poultney High School: Teacher - Lynn Silvestro

Students from Lynn Silvestro’s semester-long Community Service Learning class develop a public services message for distribution through the local cable access channel. Students research the chosen topic, develop their story, write scripts, designate roles/characters, produce, direct and act in the video, managing all facets of the project.

Researching the project requires students to make contact with local community services organizations to assess the need for publicity on an important topic. They use video equipment, the studio and editing equipment provided by PEG TV in Rutland at Stafford Technical Center. Taping takes place in and around the community appropriate to the setting of the story, and in studio when needed.

The project provides students with many learning opportunities aligned with the Vital Results including communications, reasoning and problem solving, personal development, and civic/social responsibility. Many Fields of Knowledge standards are integrated into this program including critical response, literature and media, artistic process, critical evaluation, investigation and numerous others.
