YEAR END STUDIES (Y.E.S.) PLANS
Rutland High School
Rutland, Vermont

OVERVIEW

Year End Studies (Y.E.S. Plan) offers a variety of learning experiences for all Rutland High School students. The program is designed to provide half day and full day courses, seminars, field experiences, internships, community service and other teaching and learning opportunities. No students receive financial compensation for any of these learning experiences.

Students are offered a myriad of enrichment and remedial courses (see Course Description) giving them the opportunity to explore or enrich their learning beyond what has traditionally been offered during the school year. Those students who have failed or performed poorly in core classes will have the chance to improve their grades before the year ends.

A normal and expected course load includes one (1) of these options: one (1) full day Y.E.S. Plan course; two (2) half day Y.E.S. Plan courses; one (1) Y.E.S. Plan course and two (2) remedial courses; two (2) Y.E.S. Plan courses and one (1) remedial class. Students may not repeat Y.E.S. Plan Enrichment courses from year to year.

ATTENDANCE Year End Study Dates: May 16 - June 11, 2001

Students must attend and participate in Year End Studies, an integral element of the academic year. School attendance policies and all school rules and procedures remain in effect. Students must attend 16 of the 18 days during Y.E.S. Plan in order to receive credit. Special and unique circumstances will be considered by the Attendance Committee, but only upon rare occasions will exemptions be granted. Y.E.S. Plan daily absentee lists will be published at the end of the day. Due to the June 7, 2001 graduation date, seniors will be required to attend Y.E.S. courses through and including Wednesday, June 6, 2001.

CREDIT

Successful participation in Year End Studies for each year at Rutland High School is a graduation requirement except for students enrolled in Stafford Technical Center's full day programs. A special note to seniors: A failed Year End Studies course by a senior will result in that senior not being eligible to graduate with the class on June 7, 2001. The senior will receive a diploma upon successful completion of a Year End Studies option (see options below). These options are available only after June 11, 2001, the completion of Year End Studies.

OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS WHO FAIL YEAR END STUDIES

Note: All options must be pre-approved by the Rutland High School Principal.

  1. Take a summer course for credit.
  2. Take a summer academic camp course for credit.
  3. Take a night course at Stafford Technical Center, Community College of Vermont or other educational facility.
  4. Perform community service for forty (40) hours; a journal is required; must be approved by the Career Center and the Rutland High School principal. (Each course failed is forty (40) hours; an all day program is eighty (80) hours of volunteer service.)
  5. Perform volunteer service at the Rutland High School. This must be done sometime before or after school or during vacation time. (Each course failed is forty (40) hours; an all day program is eighty (80) hours of volunteer service.)

COURSE FEE WAIVERS

Students should consider all course options. Any additional costs for programs should not be a determining factor. For programs that incur additional fees, i.e. admission fees, travel expenses, etc., student fees may be waived by the Y.E.S. Plan Committee or other arrangements may be made to allow student access. Independent Study and School-To-Work Experiences are not eligible for course fee waivers.

A separate "Fee Waiver Application" should be submitted by April 4, 2001 and approved prior to course registration on April 11, 2001. This application may be picked up in the Career Center, Main Office or Guidance Office.

ENROLLMENT

Classes will be limited to 20 students unless, as part of their course proposals, teachers offer a rationale for larger or smaller numbers. Students will select their course choices in early April through an arena scheduling process. This process will be explained in detail to students prior to their selection.

GRADING

In order to encourage risk-taking and learning enrichment, all students taking Y.E.S. Plan enrichment classes will be graded as: Honors/Pass/Failure.

SCHOOL-TO-WORK EXPERIENCE

Students in grades 10 - 12 may pursue service-based learning opportunities in the community as alternatives to regular Y.E.S. Plan courses offered on campus. These off-campus opportunities may be career oriented "shadowing" experiences, internships or community service projects in schools or other non-profit agencies. The School-To-Work Experience deadline is March 19, 2001. All applications, interviews and program approvals must occur prior to the deadline. (See Process Steps below.)

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Students in grades 10 - 12 interested in exploring a subject which may not be possible to pursue during the regular school year, may wish to develop an independent study project. Students must submit a Statement of Interest, a written proposal and an employer contract to the Career Center for approval. Deadline for approval is the same as the School-To-Work Experience, March 19, 2001. (See Process Steps below.)

PROCESS STEPS

Please do the following for your Y.E.S. Plan Proposal:

  1. Pick up a Student Statement of Interest form from the Career Center. Fill out this form completely and hand it in to the Career Center.
  2. Hand in a typewritten proposal detailing the academic component of your Y.E.S. Plan. This must show how your Y.E.S. Plan experience will prepare you for the world of work, how it relates to the classes you are currently taking at RHS, or how this experience will prepare you for college or a career. Sample proposals are available for review in the Career Center.
  3. Have the Employer Contract signed by your site supervisor. You can pick up this form in the Career Center.
  4. Have a parent or guardian sign all forms.

REMEDIAL CLASSES

Students failing courses or wishing to improve their final grade average may opt to take a remedial core course (math, science, social studies, English).

All remedial grades will be averaged with the Final Grade resulting in a higher or lower grade depending upon student performance during the Year End Studies. The three-week remedial grade will be averaged based on a four (4) to one (1) weight.

Final Grade x 4 + Remedial Grade

Remedials may be used to improve failing grades or to improve grades in curricular areas such as mathematics and foreign language that require a grade of 70 to continue to the next level.

Students may choose to take a remedial course to improve their grade with a maximum allowable final average of 70.

SUMMER SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS

Students must have a minimum grade of 50 to be considered for Summer School. Students whose final grade is less than 50 may take the Year End Studies Remedial to improve the grade to a minimum of 50 to allow them to take the Summer School Course.

MONITORING PERFORMANCES FOR OFF-CAMPUS EXPERIENCES

Faculty will help establish off-campus volunteer work settings for interested students and will supervise and evaluate students in those experiences.

Teachers will review the student's program design on the Work Experience Application and will schedule a conference with the student prior to the service-based learning experience. Teachers will visit and evaluate students in these experiences. Students will be required to keep a journal documenting their learning as well as present a project at the Y.E.S. Plan Open House.

Teachers will be assigned to supervise students engaged in Independent Study courses based upon the agreement signed and approved on the Work Experience Application.
