Hurricane Katrina -
Special Tax Relief Provisions for Vermont

Vermont Commissioner of Taxes, Tom Pelham, announced today that the Vermont Department of Taxes would apply the special tax relief rules issued by the Internal Revenue Service to Vermont taxpayers affected by Hurricane Katrina.

The IRS issued an updated notice on September 8, 2005 allowing taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida up to January 3, 2006 to file and pay taxes with an original or extended due date that fell on or after Aug. 29, 2005.

The provisions of the IRS tax relief will also apply to Vermont returns and no interest or penalty will apply to these returns. For taxpayers seeking this special relief, please mark “Hurricane Katrina” in red letters on the top of the return. Commissioner Pelham added “I recommend checking the IRS web site at www.irs.gov/newsroom frequently to keep current on any new or updated tax relief.”

Taxpayers needing copies of Vermont returns to replace lost or damaged ones should print "Hurricane Katrina" in red at the top of the request. Disaster victims receive copies of tax returns for free.

The list of federally declared disaster areas can be found on the Federal Emergency Management Agency website at www.fema.gov/news/disasters.fema#diz Vermont taxpayers in these areas may also wish to look at the IRS Publication 547 on disasters at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p547.pdf to determine if they are eligible to file an amended 2004 tax year return to claim the 2005 hurricane disaster losses.
