Homestead Declarations and
Property Tax Adjustments

ELIGIBILITY

Homestead Declaration

  • Expect to be a VT resident on April 1 of the current tax year; and

  • Own and occupy the property as his or her principal residence as of April 1 of the current tax year. 

Property Tax Adjustment Claim

  • Property is declared as a homestead; and

  • Homeowner domiciled in (legal resident of) VT the entire previous calendar year;; and

  • Homeowner not claimed as a dependent in the previous year by another taxpayer; and

  • Do not anticipate selling the property on or before April 1 of the current tax year

Other Considerations
Homeowners with household income of $47,000 or less may be eligible to assistance for both education and municipal property taxes.

Homeowners with household income of $105,000 or more generally do not qualify for an adjustment
