A Vision for the Library and Information Networks

The overall basic need is to redefine existing space to accommodate use of computer technology, networking with other institutions and resources, and facilities for information sharing, such as small group gathering and research areas.

The current 5,112 square foot library is crowded and not well suited to provide adequate support for the bold program and role envisioned for it. The amount of space available for student use - conference space, study stations, computer research stations, production facilities, and book stacks - is below recommended standards. Any final building plan to address future needs will consider additional classrooms for conferencing and collaborative, dedicated archives areas, faculty work areas, and display spaces.

Ultimately, the expansion of library and information resources will create more dedicated space for academic activities while providing improved facilities for the movement among academic endeavors, external information sources, and the social/collaborative settings in the library.

The central role of technology and technological resources will be most evident in conversion of the current library into an Information Resource Center.

Features include:

Expansion of computer resources and the number of research stations (from 7 to 15).

Addition of Internet subscription services.

Hardware to increase network speed.

Software for electronic research instruction.

Development of an intranet (intra-campus internet) capability for communication among students, faculty, staff, etc.

Addition of audio-visual workstations.

Preservation of VCR and DVD tapes and resources.

Establishment of a synergy systems control for distribution of media.
