While it's not necessarily true that a great arts program makes a great school, a great school has a great arts program. St. Johnsbury Academy's commitment to the arts reflects the strength of its overall program, and the decision to invest in an arts center reveals the depth of this commitment. The Academy's strong programs in music, drama, and the visual arts will flourish in this new facility, and the center will provide the ability to explore possible expansions of the overall program. The unique creativity, discipline, and passion that students bring to the stage, the concert hall, or the canvas complement and enrich the Academy's other programs. Only by ensuring that each of the three "A's" - academics, athletics, and arts - are strong, can the Academy continue to meet its mission, and this center will help ensure that the arts continue to do their part in making the Academy a great school.

William Vinton, Chairman of the Fine Arts Department

Interest in the arts at St. Johnsbury Academy, once marginal, has grown dramatically over the past several years. Today the Academy is recognized for the breadth and depth of its offerings.

Subsequently, the Academy has worked with the architectural firm of Black River Design to design a building, a Center for the Arts, with 23,000 square feet of usable space on two floors and an additional 10,000 unfinished square feet on the third floor. The building will be located between Sheepcote dormitory and the Field House, facing what is now the gym parking lot which will be replaced by a traditional green.
